Before you plan a setup

  1. Start with a room. Write down the question you want to answer: how the air changes through the day, how rooms differ, or how airflow reaches a space.
  2. List what is already there. Note your home network, any Thread border router, and the apps you use to control connected devices.
  3. Check the product requirements. Read the power, placement, and compatibility details for the exact model. For a vent, record the duct-opening size and mounting location.
  4. Name rooms consistently. Use names such as Bedroom, Office, and Living room so readings and controls are easy to recognize across apps.

A short connected-home glossary

Thread
A low-power, IPv6-based network for connected devices. It carries data; it does not define every feature an app can control. Thread Group overview.
Border router
A connection between a Thread network and the rest of your home network. It forwards traffic so devices and controllers can reach each other. How Thread and border routers work.
Matter controller
The software that commissions and controls compatible Matter devices. Home Assistant is one example; supported controls depend on the device and integration. Home Assistant Matter guide.
Multi-admin
Sharing a compatible Matter device with another controller, so more than one ecosystem can operate it. Use the sharing flow in the app that already manages the device. Sharing across platforms.
Nominal opening size
The size used to describe the opening a vent fits. It is separate from the outer face-plate dimensions. See the size explanation in the Vent Face Plate configurator.
